Oakwood. It's where I grew up. It's where I transitioned from a child to a young man. It's where my parents and my sister and I lived in love as a family. It's very much the type of home I tried to recreate as a husband and parent.
Oakwood was a street in a development on the outskirts of a village which was a bedroom community for a larger city in upstate NY. It was home. It was my sanctuary as a child and teenager. It dominates my memory of my family as a youngster. It was where grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins came to visit on weekends and holidays.
It was home.
Oakwood
[Verse 1]
We moved in in nineteen seventy
Mom and Dad moved out in two thousand
Mark and Greg on one side
Rob and Alex and Betsy on the other
Mike and Missy behind
[Pre-Chorus]
It was a beautiful house and a wonderful home
No air-conditioning, no dishwasher
But a house full of love
[Chorus]
Oakwood, Oakwood, we’ll always come back
To the place where we laughed, we played, we grew
Dad and I throwing a thousand baseballs
Shooting basketballs in the driveway too
We rode our bikes down that old tow path
Trick-or-treating under the autumn sky
Tracey on horses, me building my tiny railroad
Mom and Dad raising us up high
[Verse 2]
Dad worked at the community college
Taught thousands of students, coached cross-country
Mom took care of us all
She was a substitute teacher, you see
We went to the little old church on Sunday
Wegmans every week for a loaf of bread and jam
Braces on our teeth, Little League in the summer
Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, the best we could be
[Chorus]
Oakwood, Oakwood, we’ll always come back
To the place where we laughed, we played, we grew
Muffy the Siamese curled up on the couch
With stories and laughter and love
[Bridge]
It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t wealthy
But it was the best home this boy ever knew
Braces and ball games and Sunday school
That’s the legacy you left for me and you
[Final Chorus]
Oakwood… Oakwood…
We’ll always come back
To the memories we made
In that beautiful house
And the love that stayed
